4th Rig training report 25-03-2012
Ghetto busts some big air.!
After a slow start letting the yokels have a clean hometurf getaway, Ghetto powered off to the right side of the course, chasing flat water. The 4th rig allowing us the freedom to throw it around and sail clean... at least that's what we thought until the wind started piping in at up to 25kts just before the top mark. We went round with the 13s and a couple of 16s just in front. The red 16 went into their bearaway with a bit too much vang on, and their backstays ripped the Tball fittings straight out of the aluminium tube.!!! Rig Down. T-balls strike again. The Ghetto cruised round avoiding the pile-up and threw the little black kite up. Once Ben was out we sent it hard, chasing down the lead 13 by the gybe. He managed to roll inside us and run a bit higher to the bottom mark. But shooting high held a high price with them splashing before they made it. We pushed hard but as flyweights, the kite was almost collapsing we were running so deep. We got the speed wobbles as the kite came down, so a quick swim followed. Got her up then 2-sail, 2-string at death angle to the bottom mark. I was having flash-backs to GTown. Unlike GTown, the skinny hull drove deep down a big set, Volvo70 style spray everywhere and when it powered up again, we rolled over next to the bottom mark. My charter ride, the Tradey smoked past us with no kite yelling "Now it's really windy!!" Cherub with no kite?? it must be windy. Back up and racing and we were now chasing the remaining fleet. 2x 16s and 2x 13s. The sled was sliding uphill smoothly, with height to burn over all comers. We chased hard and gained some ground by the top mark.
The wind had eased back to 15-20 by now and the next run was a dream. A quick set then sending it hard.!! The waves had built on the left of the course with the squall and we were leaping high and coming down tail first. High speed in the flats, then LAUNCH!!. Some nice smooth gybes, then send on its ear round the bottom mark again. More of the same up the 3rd work, but had to stop to retrieve the kite sheet from around the CB. Gave up chasing the other skiffs, so we tinkered with the tune to try and get more out of her. The little main blades like a Schick, so there wasn't much more to tweak.
3rd run was more of the same speed and launching. Had some Sydney harbour traffic dodging practice and came out unscathed. The creases from a few weeks away were ironed out by now and we were working the boat hard. Final beat and run and the 4th rig was coming into its own. We would have been destroyed by the 3rd rig by now. We skated down to the bottom mark for the last time then made a quick beat to the finish.
The rides were the highlight of the day. There's just something about the hull leaving the safety of the water for a moment that makes your heart stop, then race as it slaps back down and you regain warpspeed.

Paulo's Big Day Out
the boat got wet. its been over a year. the wet suit still fit,
the trap harness still fit.......
I waltzed into the royal and ancient Geelong yachting club and asked if there was a crew available... 10 minutes later a strapping young lad 6'13" tall 85 odd kgs asks if I’m looking for a crew... time to go sailing.
10knots building to 18knots in stingray bay (same bit of water as the interdoms a few years back) so flat flat water. building but patchy sea breeze from the southeast.
2nd rig was in. it felt quick, it went quick, three laps hot dog course with a gate to windward. dodging contenders, lasers, tasers, 29ers, 420's and about 1397 international cadets.
two races, one arse load of uncoordination, one capsize, two bullets, one fastest time on handicap, one missing from results.
as per usual the best kite ride was the one after the finish- sailed up past the top mark, up goes the kite gust plus gust plus gust plus flat water spooky silent fast where the only sound is a hisssssss, finished when we got to the wharves.
two days later my fingers still hurt, my arms still hurt, my sit bones still hurt my thighs still hut, and my smiling muscles hurt from grinning so much.

I forgot to mention the rescue mission...
Well I didn't so much forget.. I just didn't want to tease the 18 boys too much on their own website...
So we derigged the skiffs.. The sun was going down, as were the rum cans, when the call came over the radio.. Mayday Mayday Mayday..
The rescue boat radioed in to Chris.. The token 18 was still out there.. They requested a skipper to steer the boat home as they couldn't tack or gybe it..
Yes you read that correctly..
Wayno and I jumped in the rescue boat and did a quick sub for two of the crew.. They had been flopping around out there for quite a while so were buggered... We righted the skiff and sailed her home... Unfortunately the crew had un-tied the kite, as it would have been a cracking ride back in through the leads..!!

Race Reporte 28th January 2011
The rain couldn’t keep us away from a tasty 3rd rig day.
Apparently the wind was strong early on but I wouldn’t know because I turned up late, just like skinnyman the rock star.
PB and Ghetto put in third rig, but the wind dropped leaving PB one-wiring into an easterly. The flyweights on Ghetto were still two wiring and we weren’t too keen about that.
Course was set and it was clear the pin end of the start couldn’t be laid on Starboard. And Ghetto Sled will attempt the port tack bandit as sure as night follows day. We lined ourselves up underneath them and let the game begin. Lucky for us we hit the line right on the pin with speed, closing Richard out. What I wasn’t counting on was their splash tack afterwards! It was a handy margin to have because they made plenty of ground on us up that first work. Two sail reach past ‘the best laid wing mark this year’! The wind was building and began to swing back south so we followed it.. We were comfortably on the wire now and the easterly brought a great little swell down between king and green.
The course was adjusted for the second race so this start was a bit more normal. I was starting to get the hang of the boat more and we hit the line on time again!! The clowns on the start boat made yelled out some gun noises, called something about OCS but I figured they were joking.
Second race was somewhat similiar to the first, with Ghetto hot on our tails. With a little more time Richard and Ben C will be a well oiled team – look out!
